The company’s history began in 1867 in Lucca, when the young Filippo Berio began producing olive oils worthy of his family and friends.Season after season, his fame grew and, before long, he was hailed as Italy’s first olive oil connoisseur. The late 1800s saw thousands of Italians emigrating all over the world. Already acclaimed in Italy, Filippo Berio recognised this new opportunity and set sail for America, securing orders from dozens of Italian importers, hoteliers, retailers and restaurateurs – the basis of Filippo Berio’s worldwide reputation.

Shortly before Filippo Berio’s death, a new partnership was formed and in 1919 his friend Dino Fontana, together with other wine and oil merchants, founded the Salov Group Olive Oil Company. In the following years, the Salov Group expanded rapidly under the Filippo Berio brand name and became famous in many other countries.

Like wine, olive oil is influenced by soil, climate, fruit variety, harvesting methods and the production process. And Filippo Berio is renowned for the strict controls he applies to every step: from the purchase of the olives, to harvesting, pressing, blending and bottling the final product.
